General surface preparation

All surfaces must be sound, dry and clean and free from oil, grease, dirt, mildew, form-release agents, curing compounds, loose or flaking paint and other foreign substances.

Repair cracks, holes and other surface imperfections before primer application.

Remove loose material and sanding dust.

Ensure the prepared surface is completely dry before priming.

Previously painted surface preparation

Wash to remove contaminants.

Rinse thoroughly with water and allow the surface to dry.

Sanding is not required if the surface is properly and thoroughly cleaned.

Scuff sanding may be required on glossy, hard, slick or dense surfaces.

Remove loose paint.

Scrub heavy chalk areas and other contaminated areas before priming.

Prime bare areas after cleaning and drying.

Mildew removal

1. Scrub the affected area with a mixture of 1 litre household bleach in 3-4 litres of warm water.

2. Rinse the surface and allow it to dry.

3. Do not add detergent or ammonia to the bleach/water solution.

4. Rinse the surface clean with water.

5. Allow the surface to dry before primer application.

Material preparation

1. Mix the primer thoroughly before use.

2. Ensure settled material is completely incorporated.

Important points before starting

Apply when air and surface temperatures are between 10°C and 35°C.

Always prime on a dry surface.

Allow new stucco, plaster and masonry to cure before painting.

Use Jewell waterborne white primer for uncoated, porous or repaired interior surfaces.

Paint interiors in the sequence: ceiling, walls, windows, doors and finally trim.

Stir the primer thoroughly before application.

Intermix containers of the same product where required to maintain uniformity.

Use good-quality rollers, brushes or airless spray equipment.

Do not spread the primer too thin.

Maintain a wet edge for an even finish.

Concrete, masonry and plaster

The label states that concrete, masonry and plaster should cure before painting.

Poured-in-place concrete should be allowed to cure as specified on the label.

The label states that pH should be 13.0 or lower.

Roughen slick poured or precast concrete where required.

Remove sealers by suitable chemical cleaning or abrasive preparation where necessary.

Rinse thoroughly with water and allow to dry.

Remove loose aggregate.

Prime prepared concrete and plaster with Jewell Interior Primer.

The label notes that primer tinted toward the finish coat may help reduce finishing-coat requirements and painting cost.

Brush or roller application

1. Use a suitable nylon/polyester brush or roller.

2. Apply the primer uniformly on the prepared surface.

3. Paint in manageable sections.

4. Maintain a wet edge for an even finish.

5. Avoid excessive pressure on the brush or roller.

6. Do not spread the primer too thin.

2. Use suitable airless spray equipment.

3. Apply a uniform primer film over the prepared surface.

Coverage

The coverage of approximately 110-130 sq. ft. per litre per coat on a well-prepared surface.

Actual coverage may vary depending on substrate condition, porosity, roughness and application method.
