Product story
Product description
Jewell Fresh Air is an ultra-luxury interior paint inspired by nature and made with ingredients such as Active Bamboo Charcoal and Tea Tree Oil. The product information states zero VOCs, zero emissions and zero odour.
Its anti-bacterial and fungal resistance properties help protect the painted surface, while antimicrobial additives are stated to inhibit the growth of mold and mildew on the paint film. Application & care
First coat of fresh air
1. Complete cutting-in around corners, ceilings, windows, doors, edges and electrical fittings using a brush.
2. Apply the first coat uniformly using a brush, roller or spray.
3. Maintain a wet edge during application.
4. Avoid excessive spreading or repeatedly working over partially dried paint.
5. Allow the coat to dry before recoating.
The updated Fresh Air label states a recoat time of 4-6 hours.
Second coat of fresh air
1. Ensure that the first coat is adequately dry.
2. Remove any surface nibs or minor imperfections where required.
3. Remove all dust.
4. Apply the second coat uniformly using the same application method.
5. Inspect the finished surface for uniform shade, finish and coverage.
Where further hiding is required due to substrate condition or colour contrast, additional coating may be required; the Fresh Air source material supplied here does not state a fixed coat count.
Recommended interior painting system
Jewell WaterTite Crack Filler (where required) → Jewell WaterTite Waterproof Wall Putty (for premium full-surface levelling where required) → Jewell Interior Primer → Jewell Fresh Air
This is the standard Jewell interior-system framework used to extend product application guidance. Fresh Air-specific dilution, drying and coverage values remain governed by the Fresh Air product information.
Surface inspection
Before beginning the application, inspect the interior surface for:
Dampness, seepage or water leakage
Efflorescence or salt deposits
Algae, fungus or microbial growth
Cracks, hollow plaster or loose plaster
Dust, grease, oil and other contaminants
Loose, peeling, flaking or chalking paint
The source of active dampness or seepage should be identified and rectified before decorative painting. Do not apply the paint system over an actively damp or structurally unstable surface.
Surface cleaning and preparation
Remove dust, dirt, grease, oil and loose particles.
Scrape off all loose, flaking or poorly adhered paint.
Sand repaired or uneven areas where required and remove sanding dust.
Clean grease or household stains using a mild cleaning solution where required and allow the surface to dry completely.
The prepared surface must be clean, sound and dry before proceeding.
Fungus, algae and mildew treatment
Where biological growth is present, clean and treat the affected surface before applying putty, primer or Fresh Air.
Remove visible fungal, algal or mildew growth.
Use an appropriate Jewell surface-treatment product, such as Jewell WaterTite Bio-Wash Fungicidal Cleaner, where specified for the system.
Allow the treated surface to dry completely before further application.
Do not apply primer or topcoat over active biological growth.
Crack treatment
For non-structural plaster cracks, Jewell WaterTite Crack Filler may be used within the approved Jewell interior system.
1. Open the crack slightly where required to create a clean groove.
2. Remove loose particles and dust from inside the crack.
3. Ensure the groove is clean and dry.
4. Press the crack filler firmly into the crack using a putty knife or spatula.
5. Avoid leaving cavities or air pockets.
6. Level the repaired area with the surrounding surface.
7. Allow the repair to dry completely.
8. Lightly sand the repaired area to obtain a uniform surface.
Structural, moving or recurring cracks require appropriate civil repair and should not be treated only with decorative crack filler.
Premium putty application
For premium full-surface levelling, Jewell WaterTite Waterproof Wall Putty may be used as part of the standard Jewell interior system.
Surface Preparation
The substrate should be fully cured, stable and free from active dampness.
Lightly pre-wet bare cement plaster where required by the putty system.
Do not leave running or standing water on the surface.
Mixing
Mix with clean potable water in the ratio specified on the product pack or approved technical data.
Use a mechanical mixer to prepare a smooth, uniform and lump-free paste.
Prepare only as much material as can be used within its working time.
Do not add water to material that has started setting.
Application
1. Apply the first thin, uniform coat using a putty knife or steel trowel.
2. Allow the first coat to dry for approximately 4-6 hours.
3. Apply the second coat.
4. Keep the combined thickness of both coats within approximately 1.5 mm.
5. Allow the completed surface to dry thoroughly.
6. Lightly sand using 320-number or finer sandpaper.
7. Remove all sanding dust before priming.
Interior primer application
Apply Jewell Interior Primer over the completely dry and prepared surface.
1. Stir the primer thoroughly before use.
2. Dilute only as specified on the primer product pack or latest approved technical data.
3. Apply one uniform coat using a brush, roller or spray.
4. Avoid excessive dilution, uneven application and missed areas.
5. Allow the primer to dry completely before Fresh Air application.
6. Use an additional primer coat only where the substrate condition requires it.
7. Lightly smooth the dried primer where required and remove all dust before topcoat application.
Fresh air material preparation
Verify the product, shade/base, batch and pack before use.
Stir the paint thoroughly before application.
Where multiple containers are used on one continuous wall, intermix the required quantity to minimise shade or finish variation.
Dilute with water as required by the approved Fresh Air application instruction.
Do not introduce unauthorised additives.
Technical reference
Ideal application areas
Interior walls
Residential interiors
Premium interior space
Suitable surfaces
Properly prepared interior wall surfaces
Plastered interior walls
Masonry interior surfaces
Previously painted interior surfaces after proper preparation
New plaster requirements
Allow newly plastered masonry surfaces to cure fully before painting.
The surface must be firm, properly cured and completely dry before application.
Remove cement laitance, mortar splashes and other construction residues.
Confirm that the surface is dry and suitable for primer and topcoat application.
Where the standard Jewell interior painting system is followed, surface dryness and alkalinity should be checked before painting.
Technical application summary
Actual coverage and drying time may vary depending on substrate condition, porosity, application method and site conditions.
Application precautions
Do not apply on actively damp or unstable surfaces.
Do not paint over unresolved structural cracks.
Do not apply directly over active fungus, algae or mildew.
Use clean water for dilution.
Maintain consistent material preparation across the same continuous wall.
Ensure adequate ventilation during preparation, application and drying.
Keep out of reach of children.
Protect from freezing.
Refer to the Material Safety Data Sheet for additional health and safety information.
Post-application care
Protect freshly painted surfaces from dust, water, abrasion and accidental damage during initial drying.
Use mild cleaning methods on cured painted surfaces.
Avoid harsh cleaners, abrasive pads and excessive scrubbing.
The product is described as washable and scrubbable and having exceptional cleanability.
Repainting surfaces
1. Check the adhesion and condition of the existing paint.
2. Remove loose, flaking, chalking or poorly adhered paint.
3. Clean grease, stains, fungus and sanding dust.
4. Repair cracks, dents and pinholes using the appropriate Jewell repair material.
5. Sand repaired areas smooth and remove dust.
6. Apply Jewell Interior Primer over repaired, exposed, porous or uneven areas as required.
7. Allow the primer to dry completely.
8. Apply Fresh Air using the approved application method and source-specified drying intervals.
Full putty application is not required where the existing coating is sound, smooth and firmly adhered.
Special note for damp interior walls
Fresh Air is a decorative interior finish and should not be treated as a standalone waterproofing system. Where dampness or seepage is present, the source of water ingress should first be identified and rectified.
Use an appropriate Jewell WaterTite waterproofing or damp-control system where technically required.
Do not cover active seepage with decorative paint alone.
Proceed with putty, primer and Fresh Air only after the substrate is suitably treated and dry.
